1 – How the French Countryside is Changing
Moi, je m’inquiète depuis de nombreuses années au sujet des pesticides dans les fruits et les légumes qu’on mange. C’est une des raisons pour laquelle j’ai commencé à jardiner bio il y a longtemps. Et l’absence de pesticides dans le jardin n’est pas seulement un atout pour nous : c’est beaucoup plus sain pour tous les animaux et les plantes qui y vivent !
I have been concerned for many years about the pesticides in the fruits and vegetables that we eat. That’s one of the reasons I started gardening organically a long time ago. And the absence of pesticides in the garden is not only an asset for us: it’s much healthier for all the animals and plants that live there!
Pour moi, il est normal de croiser toutes sortes de bêtes, petites et plus grandes, dans le jardin : vers de terre, scarabées, abeilles, coccinelles, syrphes, crapauds, hérissons, mésanges bleues et autres oiseaux… Ce sont mes alliés.
For me, it’s normal to come across all kinds of animals, small and larger, in the garden: earthworms, beetles, bees, ladybugs, hoverflies, toads, hedgehogs, bluetits and other birds … They are my allies.
Ça m’a vraiment choquée le jour où un agriculteur espagnol, en visite avec sa famille dans nos chambres d’hôtes, a fait un tour du jardin et est revenu dans la salle à manger, ravi : « Vous avez beaucoup, beaucoup d’oiseaux dans votre jardin, c’est merveilleux », a-t-il dit. « Ça fait très longtemps que je n’ai pas vu d’oiseaux chez nous, dans mes champs à petits pois. »
It really shocked me the day that a Spanish farmer, visiting with his family in our B & B went around the garden and came back to the dining room, delighted: “You have many, many birds in your garden, it’s wonderful”, he said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen any birds at home, in my pea fields.”
Mais c’est évident, tout ça ! Les oiseaux vont disparaître s’ils n’ont rien à manger. Et des études internationales récentes suggèrent qu’au cours des derniers trente ans, le nombre d’insectes en Europe a chuté de plus de 70%.
But all that is obvious! Birds will disappear if they have nothing to eat. And recent international studies suggest that over the past 30 years the number of insects in Europe has dropped by more than 70%.
Là, je parle du règne des animaux. Mais côté plantes, nous avons besoin de nos plantes sauvages aussi, pour maintenir la diversité, pour nourrir les insectes. Et voilà qu’un ami, Olivier, me contacte pour parler d’un mouvement, ‘Nous voulons des coquelicots’, qui se développe en France pour sensibiliser les gens, pour montrer au public qu’il est vraiment temps d’agir plus activement contre les pesticides, pour inviter les individus, les membres ordinaires de la société à se solidariser et à montrer leur voix.
Here, I’m talking about the animal kingdom. But on the plant side of things, we need our wildflowers too, to maintain diversity, to feed the insects. And there you go, a friend, Olivier, contacts me to talk about a movement, ‘We want poppies’, which is developing in France to raise awareness, to show the public that it is really time to do something more actively against pesticides, to invite individuals, ordinary members of public to work together and to show their voice.
Il paraît que ce qui a déclenché la création du mouvement, c’était la démission du ministre de l’écologie, Nicolas Hulot, fin août 2018. Nicolas Hulot est une figure médiatique depuis longtemps, et un activiste pour la protection de l’environnement depuis encore plus longtemps. Quand il a accepté d’entrer dans le gouvernement, les gens ont pensé qu’il allait pouvoir influencer la politique nationale, faire prendre et aussi faire accepter des décisions difficiles et sensibles affectant l’environnement et l’avenir de la planète. Gros choc, donc, et grosse déception quand il a annoncé sa démission.
It seems that what triggered the creation of the movement was the resignation of the Minister of Ecology, Nicolas Hulot, late August 2018. Nicolas Hulot has been a media figure for a long time, and an activist for the protection of the environment for even longer. When he agreed to join the government, people thought that he would be able to influence national politics: to take, and also to get people to accept, difficult and sensitive decisions affecting the environment and the future of the planet. It was a big shock, then, and big disappointment when he announced his resignation.
2 – Ban Pesticide Use in France: “Nous Voulons des Coquelicots”
Deux semaines plus tard, le mouvement ‘Nous voulons des coquelicots’ est né. J’ai trouvé un article intéressant à son sujet, écrit au moment de son lancement et qui explique très clairement ses objectifs. En gros, le groupe a écrit une charte dénonçant l’utilisation continue des pesticides dans le pays, et appelant le public à montrer leur solidarité. Et comment ? D’abord, ils espèrent que cinq millions de Français et de résidents en France vont signer la charte ; que le mouvement se répand partout dans le pays ; et qu’il y aura des rassemblements pour sensibiliser le public le premier vendredi du mois, chaque mois, devant les mairies des villes, des villages, partout en France. Two weeks later, the movement ‘We want poppies‘ was born. I found an interesting article about it, written at the time of its launch and which explains its objectives very clearly. Basically, the group has written a charter denouncing the continued use of pesticides in France and calling on the public to show their solidarity. And how? Firstly, they hope that five million French people and residents in France will sign the charter; that the movement will spread everywhere in the country; and that there will be rallies to raise awareness on the first Friday of the month, every month, in front of town halls, in towns and villages all over France. 3 – Taking Action Against Pesticide Use in France
Le vendredi 7 décembre 2018, Olivier (cet ami très impliqué dans le bio, le manger sain, la sauvegarde d’un sol fertile, … ) envoie un mail à une vingtaine de personnes qu’il sait être très sensibles, eux aussi, aux problèmes de l’environnement. Olivier commence à travailler dur pour motiver les gens autour de lui. Il prend contact avec d’autres organisateurs de groupes locaux.
Friday, December 7, Olivier (this friend who is very involved in organic growing, healthy eating, and the safeguard of fertile soil, … ) sends an email to about twenty people he knows to be very receptive, too, to the problems of the environment. Olivier starts working hard to motivate people around him. He makes contact with other organizers of local groups.
4 – Reunion Against Pesticides in France
Première réunion à Jugon les Lacs, l’équipe se rencontre et discute les idées. Autour d’une boisson chaude, il y a des banderoles à préparer. Il y a aussi des démarches administratives à prendre : par exemple, une déclaration à faire en mairie et en préfecture pour un rassemblement sur la voie publique. Il faut contacter la presse et inviter les journalistes à faire un article pour annoncer l’évènement, il faut développer nos propres moyens de communication et d’information, créer notre propre page Facebook. Puis nous regardons des feuilles avec des chansons françaises bien connues, que d’autres groupes de ‘coquelicots’ ont adaptées avec de nouvelles paroles pour la cause. Ces adaptations viennent de partout en France : de Rouen en Normandie, du Morbihan en sud-Bretagne, et de l’Aube dans le Grand Est. Nous chantons avec Patrick à l’accordéon. Vite, une photo pendant qu’on y est !
First meeting at Jugon les Lacs, the team gathers and discusses the ideas. Around a hot drink, there are banners to prepare. There are also administrative procedures to be taken: for example, a declaration to be made at the town hall and prefecture for a gathering on a public highway. We must contact the press and invite journalists to write an article to announce the event, we must develop our own means of communication and information, create our own Facebook page. Then we look at sheets of paper with well-known French songs, which other groups of ‘Coquelicots’ have adapted with new lyrics for the cause. These adaptations come from all over France: Rouen in Normandy, Morbihan in South Brittany, and Aube in the Grand Est. We sing with Patrick on the accordion. Quick, a picture while we are at it!

5 – How to Act to Ban Pesticides in France
Après la réunion, on continue à réfléchir. Moi, par exemple, qu’est-ce que je peux faire ? Qu’est-ce que je peux contribuer ? Ah, ça y est, j’ai une idée : la boisson chaude pendant la réunion était conviviale… … et si je faisais de la soupe pour le rassemblement du 7 décembre ? On va être à l’extérieur, il va faire froid, probablement. Quelque chose à manger ou à boire, c’est toujours le bienvenu, surtout si c’est gratuit ! Et comme ça le public va peut-être rester discuter un peu plus longtemps, même signer la charte. Et en plus, j’ai beaucoup de légumes du jardin que je peux utiliser. J’envoie un mail à Olivier pour proposer cette idée.
After the meeting, we continue to think. Me, for example, what can I do? What can I contribute? Ah, that’s it, I have an idea: the hot drink during the meeting was convivial … … what if I made soup for the December 7th rally? We’re going to be outside; it’s probably going to be cold. Something to eat or drink is always welcome, especially when it’s free! And that way the public will perhaps stay to talk a little longer, even sign the charter. And besides, I have a lot of garden vegetables that I can use. I send an email to Olivier to suggest this idea.
Quelle soupe choisir ?
Et voilà, c’est fait, je suis ‘responsable soupe’. Je vais préparer la soupe à la maison, ça, c’est sûr. Je dresse une liste du matériel à apporter sur la place : une petite table, une nappe, des gobelets, des thermos, un seau… rien de trop compliqué à organiser. Oh, et une lampe de poche, puisqu’il va faire noir. Le weekend avant, je teste mes recettes et invite Olivier et la presse à une dégustation.
And that’s it, done, I am ‘soup manager’. I will prepare the soup at home, that’s for sure. I draw up a list of equipment to take to the square: a small table, a tablecloth, cups, thermos flasks, a bucket … nothing too complicated to organize. Oh, and a flashlight, since it’s going to be dark. The weekend before, I test my recipes and invite Olivier and the press to a tasting session.
Des amis me prêtent gobelets plastiques recyclables et thermos. Une amie, Lyn, propose de m’aider à me préparer vendredi après-midi, puis à servir la soupe le soir. Et les autres préparations continuent : nous faisons des badges en forme de coquelicot avec les mots ‘Stop pesticides’ au centre, et nous photocopions plus d’exemplaires des nouvelles paroles de notre chanson.
Some friends lend me recyclable plastic cups and thermos flasks. One friend, Lyn, offers to help me prepare on Friday afternoon, then serve the soup during the evening. And the other preparations continue: we make poppy-shaped badges with the words ‘Stop pesticides’ in the center, and we make more photocopies of the new lyrics of our song.
6 – Anti Pesticide Protest in Brittany
Le jour-J, Lyn et moi descendons à Jugon de bonne heure pour aller chercher une petite table dans l’atelier de dessin. Nous nous installons à côté de l’arbre de Noël. Et puis tout va très vite : les gens arrivent, différentes personnes prennent la parole avec un porte-voix pour parler de pesticides et pour expliquer le mouvement des coquelicots. Et bien sûr, nous chantons les chansons que nous avons adaptées et répétées !
On the day itself, Lyn and I go down to Jugon early to collect a small table from the art workshop. We set up next to the Christmas tree. And then everything happens very fast: people arrive, various people speak with a megaphone to talk about pesticides and to explain the ‘Coquelicot’ movement . And of course, we sing the songs that we have adapted and rehearsed.
7 – Signing The Anti Pesticide Charter
Nous servons la soupe, tout le monde chante ou écoute, nouvelles prises de parole, et on encourage les gens à signer la charte pour montrer leur soutien. Puis on se regroupe et on prend la pose, banderole à l’arrière, pour une photo de presse. Je profite de l’occasion pour faire une photo pour cet article – photo que je regarde de plus près, plus tard. Oh tiens – super ! C’est Monsieur le maire de Jugon qui signe ! We serve the soup, everyone sings or listens, more people speak out, and people are encouraged to sign the charter to show their support. Then we gather together and we pose, a banner in the background, for a press photo. I take the opportunity to take a photo for this article – a photo that I look at more closely, later. Le rassemblement touche à sa fin, et on se prépare à se disperser… mais pas avant de se donner rendez-vous, même heure, même endroit, le premier vendredi du mois prochain.
The gathering comes to an end, and we prepare to disperse … but not before arranging to meet up again, same time, same place, on the first Friday of next month.
